Andrews Motorsports - The good ole days

Every once in a while, you'll hear the phrase "all good things must come to an end". I really wish I could give a good answer as to why this type of thing happens, but I can't. All I can say is... that's life.

I think we all agree that riding at Andrews was mx at it's best. Mike always took care of his track and you better believe it was for the advanced rider. Big jumps were just around a few tight corners, up hill, down hill and a hi-speed straight-away that would have your bike swapping like a fish out of water if you're not focused keeping it between your legs.

And best of all... the best whoops in town. So lets take a trip down memory lane and re-live the good ole days, shall we!

The whoop-de-dos:

No one... and I do mean no one, had a set of whoops like Andrews Motorsports. Most riders would double all the way through (including myself) and the advanced riders would either triple through or skim the tops. I've even witnessed a rider quad through these bad boys. Pretty ballzy don't ya think? Once you think you have em down, Mike would re-build the whoops back up to man status. I can still hear Mike saying... "ah these whoops are just speed bumps to the top pros". And I'd say he's right on the mark with that statement.

The Winter.

Andrews was always closed during the months of January and February to let the coldest weather pass. And then, would re-open the first weekend of March. These were the times we'd all load up and head to the sand pits in SC for some good ole sand riding. By the time the track was open for the year, it was a good month or two before the leaves started blooming. It was cold at times but there was nothing like a good ride to get you all warmed up.

Next was the Spring and Summer time. At this point, the track was in full swing and all the riders would bring there awnings to keep the heat and sun off their head. Even with this track being buried in the woods, the roughness of the track would bring out the exhaustion. My point here is when you left Mikes track, you left know you just rode a mans track.

The Fall season. Now this is always my favorite time of year. You know that Andrews would be groomed with all kinds of natures color with the entire track being surrounded by trees.

And once it's all said and done and your packed up and ready to hit the road, there was nothing like the high fives from riders for a good day of riding. We had the best of times... for sure.

My story of the Racer X job interview!

Yep, you heard right. Racer X Illustrated job interview! I haven't spoken of this to anyone but to a select few people. Maybe it's the New Years cheers or the giddy feeling I have about my new business but I feel now is the time make it public. Life has presented something to me that I feel is a career gift and Racer X actually had a little something to do with it.

Drum roll please... this is how it all went down. I'll try to make it short and not go into every small detail, cause there was definitely a ton of it! :)

It was winter season, 2010. I submitted my resume to Racer X for a photo/video/web position that was open at the Racer X headquarters. My first interview was actually a phone interview and my thoughts were, if I can have a good phone interview, then the next step should be a face to face interview. A face to face would be a giant step forward you know! Why else would they bring me all the way up (West Virginia meaning all the way up) if they just weren't interested.

So, e-mail confirmed, I'm headed North for a dream job interview with a company that I'm a huge fan of, doing something I'm passionate about! You can guess that I was not on cloud 9... it was more like cloud 100!

After checking into my hotel for the night, I got a call from Bryan Stealey (who I'd been talking with during the whole process) asking if I wanted to meet up for coffee the next morning. And you know I was up for that! A good chance to shake the nerves before going into my interview.

Long story short and skipping all the fine details, the interview was outstanding! After the interview, Bryan, Davey Coombs and other members of the staff took me out for lunch at a fine Indian restaurant where we all talked about... yep... you guessed it, motocross! It felt so good that it was almost inexplicable.

After lunch we wrapped up, shook hands and I drove back to my hotel to get my luggage and start making my way back home. Before I left, Bryan had mentioned something about going out to some local bars that evening for a few cold ones. But a serious snow storm was moving in and I felt it was best that I start making my way back to the Carolinas.

The job position was between myself and one other guy! I made it in over hundreds of applicants. That alone is a great accomplishment!

About a week later, I was notified that I didn't get the job but to keep my head up. I think the next few days my mouth didn't open much unless I really had to talk. I was bummed out for sure. I mean, how many chances in life do you get an opportunity to work for a company doing something you dreamed of since childhood, along with the industries top professionals?

Even though I didn't get the job, and was a bit bummed, I didn't let it take over my life. For whatever reason it be, it was just not my time to shine at Racer X or shall I say, in the motocross industry.

So, just like what the pros say when they're on the podium; I must give a huge shout out and big thanks to Bryan Stealey, Davey Coombs and the entire staff of Racer X Illustrated. I had the time of my life while I was there! I see it like this. I can look back and say that I was in close running for a position at Racer X Illustrated, bench race with the people that produce one of the best motocross magazines and was able to talk with some folks that most people will only read about! That to me, was a chance of a lifetime! And I am proud to say, that I came in second place on this deal!

What else can I really say! Hats off to the guy who got the job! I'd shake hands with the guy If I had the chance. I believe in having a good and positive attitude about situations that both work out and don't work out.

Now you ask, how does this tie into what I'm doing now? Well, to come so extremely close to having a dream job in the motocross industry and then have the doors closed on everything, especially when it all seemed to go so right; there obviously had to be something else in the hands of life waiting for me to grasp.

Now-a-days, I'm building my very own business. And I specialize in videography. There are some photography jobs that come around but it's mostly the video side where I stay the busiest! And I'm completely stoked. Who knows... maybe one day I'll get to do some video/photo work for Racer X.

You just never can tell!

One more thing! West Virginia is one heck-of-a beautiful state! There are postcard photos on nearly every corner. And I could just kick myself for not taking the time to snap a few shots of the breathtaking views around Morgantown!

The Updated Factory 987

Over the holidays, I managed to make a few updates to the factory. I'm super proud to say that Factory 987 is purely, 100% dedicated to motocross!

If you've visited my factory 987 website in the past, you'll know that I stay very involved with the wedding industry. It just didn't seem right to mix these two together. So I decided to build an entire new site dedicated to weddings.

A day in the life at Beaver Creek. The last segment.

I must admit... I'm a little sad that this journey has come to an end. A few weekends ago, we filmed a sport bike practice at Carolina Motorsports Park and I guess you could say that was officially the last portion of riding that we intended to do. As we headed home, I mentioned to Carlo that it would be icing on the cake if we coud sneak in 1 more mx practice. And true to Carol G's pro fashion, he made it happen. And that's mainly the reason why I'm so bummed. No matter what the situation was at hand, Carlo G made it happen. If you really think about it, I was just a tag along with a video camera in hand.

This journey actually started back in May of this year. Carlo sent me an e-mail saying he wanted a profile video sort-of like the teaser I made for Tom Kraft last year. Usually this is just a 1 day event but Carlo had something bigger in mind. Instead of a 2-3 minute video, he decided to have something more like a movie made about himself.

It was sometime around the end of summer when we finally started rolling with everything. And to fire off this journey, we just filmed a play session at Carlo G's shop. That's actually another thing that made this journey so nice. His shop is about 5 minutes from my house. So it was nothing to meet up. He also never required that I drive anywhere. I would either meet him at the shop or at his house (which was around 15 minutes away) and I could ride with him and the fellas in his van. When he really didn't have room, he made room! That spoke volumes to me. He was really putting in a solid effort to make his movie of A day in the life happen.

After the play session at the shop was in the books, the very next week we headed out to Club mx in Chesterfield SC for a day, and a week or so later, Cedar Cairn in Concord for a few sessions. It was during these times when I heard things like, mile long wheelies and backflips. I already knew he could ride a good wheelie but the backflip... I just had to see that for myself.

Around this part of the journey, daylight savings was still in affect. I met Carlo at his house one evening after work and the next thing I know, we're blasting down Albemarle Rd, filming Carlo on 1 wheel. The other wheel was in the air. Now that the adrenaline was pumping pretty good, it was time for the backflip. And he did it twice!

Next up was the big air jump. There is a huge mound of dirt that is ever so gracefully next door to Carlo off Albemarle Rd. It was one of those jumps where you had to make sure the wind wasn't blowing too hard. Cause there was definitely some air time involved with this jump. And don't you know it. Just so I could get several camera angles, Carlo hit that jump numerous times. He even pulled off a heel clicker on 1 of the jumps.

In a nut shell, that pretty much leads us up to these last 2 events. The sport bike practice worked out perfect and to put a ribbion on this whole deal, we filmed our last session at Beaver Creek MX. I must give a big high five to David Root for allowing us to film at his track.

So here we are. The very last segment! Along for the ride was Carlo G's niece and the super fast TJ Snow. One more thing! When we met that morning, Carlo said that he wasn't exactly feeling it and almost called this session off due to some back problems. After a Red Bull and lots of good ole country talk, you'd never know it. To me that's just another thing that makes Carlo Gagliardo a pro!

Beaver Creek Compound with Austin Root

Now this is what you call striking gold! A couple of months ago, I started hearing and seeing things about a private mx track that involved David Root. If you happen to know David, then you'll know that guy puts his whole heart into everything he does.

At first I thought it was just a place nearby that David Root and David Wollenhaupt were gonna build up over the years to come. But that would totally go against what I just said about David giving his whole heart. Next thing you know, I'm hearing 100 footers.

Lets rewind a bit here...

David puts his whole heart into everything, David has access to a private track, which now has 100 footers and I receive an invitation to go out and take a few pictures. Yep! I struck gold!!!

Austin was a little bummed since his 250F Kawi was down and had to ride the ole faithful 125, but good grief... you'd never know the difference if you watch him ride. And my buddy Hunter had another flat. So he took a few laps on the 125 while Austin was resting.

A few other riders were out jammin too. Blake Hovis and a couple other guys that I didn't know. Mucho thanks to all the guys riding cause they made it really fun for the picture taking guy!

Carolina Motorsports Park - A day in the life of Carlo Gagliardo

For the last couple of months, (or so it seems) Carlo and I have been trying to work in a sport bike riding session for the DVD. Several attempts were made but none seemed to work out just right. For a while, I was starting to think a road session was never gonna happen, at least for the sake of the DVD. On the last attempt to make a run at it, everything worked perfectly. On the chilly morning of November 19th; Carlo, myself and Tom, a friend of Carlo, was heading south.

Carolina Motorsports Park is located in Kershaw SC, and all I've ever heard about this track was... no one is allowed on the track for photos or anything else. Not even close! Knowing this ahead of time, I was afraid that our only sport bike sesh wasn't gonna be worth the time. In addition to that, this track was considered a green track (something I learned that day) and there were crashes happening all over the place. Lemme tell ya, it's nothing like motocross practice. If you fall on the mx track, and all of your body parts are still working, you might get roosted by your buddies when they pass. With sport bikes, everything comes to a complete stop. Nobody moves until everyone and everything is clear. I guess it makes good sense with the speed these guys are going.

So, being the professionals that we both are, Carlo and I walked up to the guy and explained what we were doing. And voila! Permission granted! Now... it wasn't the best kind of access, but it was way better than standing behind the gates.

I once heard that Carlo was "the man" out on the sport bike tracks. All I can say about that is you should've been there to see for yourself. I actually thought his bike was choking cause it wouldn't go fast enough. He is most definitely " the man".

Carolina KTM Ride Day 10.23.11

When my alarm clock went off this morning, I thought long and hard about rolling back over and slipping back into that peaceful land of zzz's. But I knew I'd really be bummed out if I did that.

I knew of a couple of friends that were gonna be there but lemme tell ya - the whole motley crue was there! It was good times for sure. And let's not forget the folks that put all the work into making this track so nice for all the riders. They really deserve some praise! All I can say is... that was one gnarly track! Thanks for this ride day. You couldn't have asked for better weather.

Session 6 - Albemarle Rd Jump - A day in the life...

First and foremost... Carlo Gagliardo knows how to take things to the next level! Just when I thought I'd seen all the talent this guy can dish out, he goes and bust big on something else. We had to take a couple of weeks off since El Nino ( or heavy storms for those that don't know what El Nino is ) decided to stop in for a visit. Now that all of the rain has cleared out, it was time to get back to the nitty gritty! We have a few more sessions left and this was one that we just had to do.

Just down the road from CG's house, is a huge mound of dirt. I swear... it looks as if some construction company came in and built that jump just for Carlo. To be honest, it has the perfect take-off and the perfect landing! And, you can jump it long ways, or sideways. They even keep the grass cut!!!

In addition that beautiful mound of dirt, there are a few other dips and hills that are perfect for getting your jump on! The first thing I thought of was Crusty Demons of Dirt. Remember those videos?

Windy Hill 5.1.11 race

It's back to Windy Hill MX and I'm loving every minute of it. Hats off to Joe and Peggy Ussery for all of their hard work. The track was fabulous!

So far this is my second race of the year from Windy Hill... and every time is just like the first time. No wonder I love this track so much. Yet again, I ran into some good friends that I haven't seen in a while.

Brandon Beabout MX training school - Pineville MX SC

I got a call from David Root asking if I wanted to tag along for the ride while they go to Pineville MX for a mx school by Brandon Beabout. As a photographer, I LOVE taking road trips when I don't have to drive, and I like visiting new tracks. So it was win-win for me.

This time of the year was right about the time when it was starting to get hot. This track is located pretty close to the beach as I couldn't help but notice the moss hanging down on the trees. So the knats were a little annoying at first but a quick spray of off quickly solved the situation.

This was my first time watching a mx training school. Brandon was pretty tuff of these guys. I was glad to see that too. Nowadays, I spend all my time behind a camera, but I sure do remember my riding days. And being tuff is part of this sport.

Windy Hill Motocross 3.20.11

I love Windy Hill MX! This track is one of my favorite tracks to come visit and snap a few shots of the riders. In addition to that, Joe and Peggy Ussery are as friendly as it gets! They've always welcomed me to go anywhere on the track I feel like going in the name of photography. I can't say thank you enough to those folks!

On this particular weekend, I really hit the jackpot (as they say). I don't remember exactly how long it's been but I ran into a few friends that I haven't seen in several years. Mix that up with your other friends who are there racing and you've got a mighty good recipe for a good day.

A day at Wide Open

For the most part, our winters here in NC are, well hang on a minute. If you're from up North, then our winters are nothing. But if you're pure southern then our winters feel a bit cold. Either way you look at it, you can ride for the most part of our winters. And on this day at Wide Open MX Park, it was a green light to ride your heart out.

I've only been to this track a couple of times and there is definitely a reason this track is called Wide Open. There is a ton of land that this track is on. And there is no telling how many people this place could hold and still not be crowded.

On top of that, it's a great track for photography. I know the track owners put a lot of effort into keeping this track up cause it's always groomed and watered. A track this size will take a nice chunk of time of groom. Kudos to the Wide Open track owners!

A chili day at the Club!

I was stoked to finally get to the track after a late morning meeting nearly shot my chances to meet Kyle Pulley and Carlo Gagliardo at Club MX. It had recently snowed but to be honest, the sandy grounds at club mx are screaming ... come and get me, come and get me. And when bad weather holds you back from riding... well, you know... you start getting a little jittery.

While I was there, the riders started busting out some sweet whips, no footers, front fender slaps and some other serious goonage! All in good times!!!

Session 5: A.K.A the back flip session! A day in the life.

A few days later from the moto session at Cedar Cairn Mx, the plan was to demonstrate the back flip back behind Carlos' house. Yep... you heard right. I said back flip! By the way, if you've ever been to Carlos' house, you'll know that his garage has several (5 if I'm counting right) sweet 2 wheeled machines! I'm totally not kidding either!!!

In addition to the back flip, I was treated to another wheely performance on the other 2 wheeled machines. We're talking endless wheelies now. I must say... if there was a way to stay on the bike and keep the throttle positioned where it needs to be; I honestly think Carlo could ride a no-hand no-footer wheely from here to infinity. But then again... what the heck am I thinking... he may already have that knicked!!!

A day in the life of Carlo Gagliardo... Session 3 & 4

The one thing I have to say about Carlo... is that he really wants to put all of his efforts into making his profile video stand out. And it really plays a huge part as to how good it will be in the end. So far, we've met around 4 or 5 times. And during each session, Carlo opens up his bag of skills and just goes out and has fun with it. I've been behind the camera for a while now and it's easy to tell when people who in front of the camera, are tensed up or either trying to hard. It's almost like I'm not there... which is exactly what you want.

Alright, enough chatter... lets get on with it! During one of our prior sessions, Carlo mentioned that if the Concord/Mooresville area happens to get a little rain, Cedar Cairn mx would be nice to hit for a quick session. A week later, we got that needed rain.

After the moto session was over, all the fellas that were hanging out at the track decided to head out to Martinos in Concord for some grub, bench racing and a lot of laughter. Good times were definitely had. And the very next day, we did it all over again!

It's day 2 of filming for Carlo and the track of choice for today is Club MX! It's always a treat to come out to this track, even if you're just watching. This facility is targeted for pro riders who are looking to make a run at racing as a career. So you know the tracks are goin' to be top notch!

At Club MX, the ground is very sandy but the folks over the track have been hauling in clay to harden up the surface a bit. Either way you look at it, this track kicks arse!!!

Carlo Gagliardo Profile: A Day in the Life...

A few months ago, Carlo Gagliardo and I discussed doing a mx profile video of himself. The list of things he wanted filmed included ... well, anything with 2 wheels. A couple of weeks ago, we were finally able to get started. First thing on the agenda, Carlo said... "come out to the shop and I'll ride a few wheelies for ya and just show off a little bit". Well I don't know about you but when people start showing off while a camera is on them, it's not always a happy ending. But... I will say that I stood corrected. Carlo most definitely knew how to ride wheelies. In fact, the roads are just not long enough around his shop to get a true grip on just how far he can ride a wheelie!

It didn't stop with just wheelies either. I can actually say that I've only seen this on the old Terafirma videos or the first few Crusty Demons of Dirt videos... (remember those). Let me just say that the guy has incredible balance. And I really don't think Carlo was showing off. He was just demonstrating his skills!!!

Overall, we spent a couple of hours filming at his shop to kick off his profile video. I must say that after seeing all of this, I'd say we're in for quite an adventure.

So... I've decided to document every session we film. This should keep you up to date on everything that happens.

Change is in the air!

Wow! I can't believe it's been this long since I've posted here. As they say... time flies when you're having fun eh! Well, lets jump right into the nitty-gritty, shall we!

This year has been an amazingly-incredible year. And it's getting better. With that being said... change is in the air. And I mean big time!

I could go on and on with all the details but I gonna try to make this short and to the point. So here goes...

Instead of using Factory 987 as my main hub for all things photography and videography... I am building another site to fill that need. From this point forward, Factory 987 will be entirely based on motocross.

That's it in a nut shell!

Les Smith

Ever since I was a kid, I've been a bit of a fanatic about motocross. So you can imagine how I felt the Saturday morning I woke up to a facebook message that said, "hey, would you be interested in putting together a video for Les Smith getting ready for the 2011 Supercross season"?

Yeah I was pumped. Big time! Chuck Shirley, owner of privateer connection put this whole thing together. So I must give a huge shout-out to Chuck.

Tom Kraft Profile Teaser

I once heard that to ride a motocross bike, all you had to do is hang on and twist the throttle. I was completely flabbergasted when I heard that but I didn't bother saying anything in return. I figured, what's the use - they obviously didn't have a clue on what they're talking about.

Anybody can get on it and "twist the throttle"... and it will definitely move forward with you. But if you want to be competitive, there are a few other things that you should be doing.

Remembering John Dubanowich

After browsing through some photos of a friends facebook page, I stumbled onto something that grabbed my attention. It was a photo of a tall skinny guy named John Dubanowich.

I'll never forget ... I was at Andrews Motorsports one Saturday afternoon when this tall skinny guy drove up in an old blue box van. If you're a motocross rider then you know the drill. You park - go sign in - get your bike out - get your gear on - and go ride! Just like that!

Fast forward about 4 or 5 months and I'm the one parking and getting ready to sign in. Except for me it was signing the dotted line to attend college for the next couple of years. I've always been really good at remembering faces and one day, as I was walking though the hallway to go to class, I notice this tall skinny guy that looked familiar. I knew it! I was hoping I'd meet someone that was going to this school ( The Art Institute of Charlotte ) that shared the same interest as I did. So I introduced myself, and from that point on, we always did the nod of hello when we didn't have time to talk. John was easy to see coming down the hall. His hat was usually on sideways with hair coming out all sides. When we did get the chance to talk, it was always about riding. When and where!

John graduated way before I did, but it was at another mx track where I'd meet up with John again for the last time. I really didn't know John all that well but when you have motocross in your blood, you'll always have something to talk about. Throw in the fact that he enjoyed Graphic Design and you've got a cool-cat in my book.

Going back to that picture of John on my friends facebook page, it was the RIP that took me by surprise. Yep, it's true. We've lost a soldiers.

I don't know who took the photo but I wanted to share it along with a few that I took of John on that last day I saw him at Trick Tank mx.

My two passions

With such a high interest in both photography and videography, I find it getting a bit hard to not take any photos while I'm out shooting video. What can I say. I just have a huge passion for both!

But... now that I have a couple of cameras that shoot beautiful HD video, it is time that I start rolling with my list of videos that I've been wanting to shoot!

I'm a bit picky of what I put together and upload so that the world can see. So if I'm not happy with my footage then I won't even bother trying to edit something out of it. You may think it's weird but that's just the way I'm built.

As I said earlier, I've had a list of videos that I've wanted to shoot and until recently, I haven't had any kind of a camera to shoot with. Thankfully, I've been able to invest in a Canon 7D and a Sony FX1. And I can't be any happier with a pair of cameras that shoots beautiful HD video.

So... since I haven't shot any photos lately, I thought I'd post a few screenshots of the video footage I'm working on.

I never thought I'd say this but I have seriously fell madly in love with photography and videography! Yep, even more than riding itself. Then again that might be easy to say since I haven't thrown my legs over a bike in a few years. I know the urge to ride is still there so maybe it's become numb. Or maybe it's because I can have my cake and eat it too. You know... do something I love, with something I love!

As much as I love to shoot stills, here lately, I have been trying to amp up my video side. It's only been a couple of months since I've had a nice video camera to shoot with.I've been working with HD content for over a year know and the clarity is just incredible. Plus, those old videos I have on you tube just aren't cutting it. Can you say cheesy! I've also grown a lot with shooting styles and even editing. So if you see me out and about, you're more than likely going to be on video in the near future.

I've actually been absent from the likes of anything motocross as the only income I have at the moment would be weddings. And I honestly can't believe how much I love to shoot weddings. There are moments that just doesn't seem to exist unless it's at a wedding.

With that being said, it's the weddings that's keeping the fuel burning for me to go out to tracks. I have a ton of things in mind that I'd love to see through. So the more weddings I get, the better the chances to me being able to carry out my ideas stuck in my head.

So stay tuned... I am going to be making a big announcement about something I am very excited about. I just want to make sure all my ducks are in a row before I send the message!

Windy Hill Ultra Series 9.5.10

After a what seems like a long summer break, Windy Hill is back in action with a District 29 Ultra Series race event. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Anytime there is a race or practice on the schedule for this track, I try my hardest to be out there. I don't know what it is but there is just something in the atmosphere at Windy Hill. Maybe it's because the track is located out in the peaceful country lands of Ellerbe NC or maybe it's because I can visit with old friends while I'm in town. Either way, I always have a great time when I'm there.

Perfect timing! Time enough to get my bright orange vest, time to talk with a good friend and time enough to get my photo gear ready. Practice was about a lap from being finished and the 1st class of the morning was already at the starting gate.

For the first motos, I decided to give my video camera a shot. I been itching to put some mx footage together but with other engagements already book, I really haven't had a chance to shoot any video. So this was a great opportunity to strut my stuff.

For the second motos, I decided to give my new Canon camera a chance to show me what it had. And I gotta say. I'm grateful to own these two cameras. Now that I have a good batch of photos, I am going to start focusing a little more on video. I think it's always great to see a good shot of someone blowing out a berm or throwing a whip in the air but it's even better when it's on video.

Just before I was about to head out for the day, I noticed Joe Ussery ( owner of Windy Hill ) standing by and wanted to thank him for having me out. As always, Joe was extremely nice and even thanked me for coming out and shooting. I tell you what - now matter where you go or what you do in life, a good personality goes a really, long ways. And that's something Joe has perfected!

Profile Videos

I've had this idea on my mind for a while now and I am finally getting some lead way on the first video. I've seen several versions of profile videos but I plan on stepping it up a quite bit. I'm not going for just the good ole "riding footage with music"... I want to go much more in depth than that. Now there is clearly nothing wrong with riding footage with music but I plan to make these videos stand out from the rest. It's gonna be intense but exciting.

I am currently underway with the first profile and once it's finished, you'll have a better idea of what I'm shooting for.

Here is the details.

Cost: $75.00 - if you live far away, then a small addition fee may apply. Full amount is needed before any shooting begins.
I always try to be sensitive to riders since all their money goes to bikes and parts but if you want your very own video, then you'll have to bypass getting that new tire.

Location: Wherever you want
That's right! If there is a specific track you like better than others then I'll shoot your riding footage there.

Time: That depends
With the amount of footage that I want to capture, it will take a good 2 different days. If you can't swing 2 days then you may want to set aside an entire day. And I mean the entire day.

How will this whole thing work?
First you'll need to get in touch with me so we can talk about it. Then I'll need your full amount before I get started. Then we'll make a plan on meeting to get shots of you riding. There will also be shots that I'll need you to do several times. If all possible I'd like to meet at your place for extra footage but if that's not possible,we'll work something else out. You can choose the music you want for your video.

Revolution MX 8.28.10

Now that I've had a few weekends to get some practice under my belt with my new camera, I felt that it was time to let loose. And let me tell ya. I did just that. In fact, I may have skipped over drive altogether and went straight to overkill cause I came back home with nearly 1,900 photos! That's what happens when you've got a rock solid camera and a fast group of riders on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.

I always try to get the photos up as fast as I can cause it's nice to be able to wake up the next morning and check out your style. Being able to have them up overnight is the goal but I really try to make it easy to find your photos.

Back in the day when I was riding; if I saw someone out shooting. I would always hope to see them that next morning but more so than that, I wanted to see all of mine together and not have to look through all the shots just to find the few of me. So I take a little extra time to organize your shots so you can see all of them together. But seeing how this batch of photos was so large, I only went as far as organizing by bike brand. Enough talk about that..

Revolution was definitely a treat to shoot. Not only was I visiting a new track but I caught word that a few of my friends we're gonna be there. It just doesn't get any better than that. I must also mention that this track brought out the most vintage riders I've ever seen. There were some great looking bikes on hand that a few guys were riding.

Oh and one more thing. The track owners of Revolution MX are definitely committed to providing a nice track for riders. Once the dust got a little heavy, I noticed a few workers came out and grabbed a hose to lay down some water. With the summer we've had this year, having a track with no dust is pretty much unheard of. They also kept a close eye out for any type of accidents with a 4 wheeler ready to get to any point of the track within a minute. That alone says a lot!

And with that being said, I'm definitely looking forward to going back.

Canon 7D vs Sony FX1

I'll try to be as straight to the point as I can but first understand this. I have a huge passion for both photography and videography. I've always loved video cameras but with the new trend of DSLR cameras being able to shoot true HD, I've been in deep thought on what to get if I could only have one. Lucky for me, I was fortunate to get both but I was very interested in know which camera is better for what. By the way, this is only my opinion and it's what works for me. The real test is when you do your very own based on whatever it is that you shoot.

Canon 7D vs Sony FX1:

Before I delve into my testing let me say that there is a ton of thinking ahead that needs to be done before you even try to compare these two cameras. Both cameras produce out of this world amazing footage. My results may not mean diddly-squat to you so. If anything, maybe what I have discovered will give you something extra to think about. Now that we have that straight, let's begin.

First you need to do this: Think about what and where you're shooting. This includes, location, the ground where you're shooting, is it indoors, outdoors, are your subjects going to be moving or sitting still... that kinda stuff.

Then think about what kind of program you'll be using to edit ( Final Cut, Adobe Premier, Avid, Sony Vegas ). Now lets get to the nitty-gritty.

I shoot a lot of motocross. This involves high speed movement, outdoor shooting and most of the time the ground is never level. My choice... Sony FX1.

Likes of the FX1 on motocross...

1. The Sony FX1 is a video camera, so it's made for... you guessed it, video. The auto focusing is fast enough that you'll be able to follow any kind of movement and do any kind of zooming, all at once. You'll hardly ever see your subject out of focus.

2. Their big or bigger than the DSLR cameras so there much easier to hold steady. You can easily get away without a tripod when you have to. This is what I meat about looking at the terrain you'll be shooting. Try centering a tripod up on a small hill will all kinds of small dirt mounds or gaps... no fun there!

3. The Sony FX1 uses DV tapes. While this may be old technology, you'll never have to worry about your memory card filling up and being out of room for footage. Unless you have big bucks and can buy a pocket full of huge compact flash cards. If not then I hope you have your computer with you to empty your cards. With the FX1, you just pop in another tape and your rolling, plus you'll always have the hard copy as back up. If something ever happened to your footage, you can always go back and re-capture the DV tape. If it's all digital and you loose your computer to hard drive failure... you have nothing. And it's gone forever!

4. The DV tapes are cheap but you gotta remember that this is an ongoing expense. So that's something you'll have to think about.

5. Your battery will more than likely last way longer than your DSLR battery and lastly, they seem to be built stronger for hot temperatures. And we all know what a hot summer it has been. Keep your DSLR out in the heat and that thing will feel like a hot bowl of soup.

Dis likes of FX1 for motocross...

1. I really can't think of any to be honest. Just to make it seem like I really did test both of these cameras, I'll just say that the Sony is heavier than the Canon 7D!!!

2. Quality??? That's really your decision. I think their both great.

3.The one think the real nice thing the Canon 7D has to offer over the Sony FX1 is the ability to upload hours worth of footage in minutes. How fast your footage uploades depends on what kind of computer you have and if you have fast card and card reader. With the FX1 you have to capture in real time. If you shoot a couple hours worth of footage, then it's gonna take a couple of hours to capture.

I also shoot weddings. My choice, the Sony FX1. Here's why...

The DSLR camera will shut off in 12 minutes. Most people will say... " who and when do you ever need to shoot longer than 12 minutes ". And I say, " I do and when I'm shooting a wedding " You might be surprised with the times you'll need your camera to record longer than 12 minutes!

Here's the deal. The FX1 is just a work horse camera with amazing quality. You can use auto focus or manual focus with ease and it has nice audio. The Canon 7D has audio but I don't think it's as nice as the Sony FX1. Plus there is no auto focus. This makes it extremely difficult to keep moving targets in focus. Especially if they're fast moving targets.

If you're shooting inside and you don't have to follow a moving target and you're computer is by your side. Then it's Canon 7D all the way. This camera produces amazing high quality in any kind of situation but since it's so light, you have to have some kind of stabilization. Whether it's a tripod or a shoulder mount. Remember when I said to look at the terrain? A level floor is way easier to set up and get it level than a hill with gaps.

The bottom line for me is this... The Canon 7D does not have auto focusing so if you're gonna use it for action or movement, you better get to know your focus ring. And the fact that it's so light, you absolutely have to have a tripod or something to hold it steady. If you can hold a SLR camera steady without a tripod then you must be dead!

Although I had big concerns with the Canon 7D shutting off after running for 12 minutes, it has turned out to be one of the least of my concerns. But note that it's because I have a nice video camera.

Oh and I almost forgot. Are you in to photography? Then you'll know what I mean when I say you've got dust on your sensor. Those aggravating specs are easy to clean on a still photo but try doing it with video footage! Think about it. You're in a hurry and you rush out the door. All you can think about is the nice footage the Canon 7D creates, You shoot the entire day only to get home and see very noticeable, dark dust specs all throughout you're precious video. Yeah... lets not think about that nightmare.

So here is my last and final draw on the Canon 7D.What editing software do you use? I use and love Final Cut Pro but in order to work with video files from the 7D, you have to use a different codec. After your footage is re-formatted, then your sitting on go. If you're using Adobe Premiere CS5, then you should be able to work with the files straight from your Canon 7D.

Okay so enough talk, here is my bullet list of likes and dislikes on both cameras.

Sony FX1 likes:

Built for video
Has fast auto focus
Manual focus
Ability to hod camera without stabilization
There is no need of a computer or huge expensive memory cards for footage
You'll always have a hard copy to re-capture if anything horrible happens to your computer
Beautiful amazing quality
Batteries last a long time
People see you with a video camera so they know you're shooting video

Sony FX1 dislike

Have to capture in real time. Hours worth of footage means hours worth of capturing
DV tapes is an on-going expense

Canon 7D likes

Beautiful amazing quality
Light and easy to carry around
The ability to take amazing photo but with the flip of a switch, you can take amazing, true HD video
Easy and very fast uploading to your computer
Killer depth of field
You can use all your nice glass

Canon 7D dislikes

You need big memory cards if you want to be able to hold a good hours worth of footage
You need your computer with you if you want to empty your card
Nearly impossible to hold steady, you must have a tripod or something equivalent
No auto focus
In 12 minutes, your camera movie mode will shut down, whether you're recording or not
It take extra time to re-format your footage
Way, way, way too easy to get dust on the sensor

Now after all of this talk I used a small video clip from both cameras so you can see for yourself. Like I said you'll need to do your own testing to see which one you like better.

Let's see, where do I begin...

I had a great time shooting all the riders at Andrews MX this past Saturday. Maybe it was the weather cause it wasn't quiet as muggy and humid out ( although I'm almost holding my breath for fall ) and the track layout was worked up to my most favorite layout.

Another thing I like about Andrews is that you really don't get to rest much. Especially with this new layout. There are lots of turns and lots of braking bumps. But that's a good thing you know... it's what separates the men from the boys. Feel free to approach Mike with that phrase and I'll bet he'll say the exact same.

Anyhoo, back to the subject! I had a great time. The track was in great shape and I even got a huge sand-spray sandwich ( cough, Cory Brambert, cough ).

If you didn't make it out then you missed a good one.

I'm already looking forward to next weekend already!

After what seems like a lifetime away from shooting motocross, I finally made it back out to the track. I headed back out to Andrews and witnessed a record breaking crowd on hand. And let me tell ya, there were definitely some fast riders out there.

I was a little hesitant to break out my camera since the dust was getting out of control but with so many riders on hand and the heat bearing down, controlling the dust was nearly impossible. Still, there was no way I could leave with getting at least a few shots.

Check out a few that I snapped from Saturday.

This is proof that Mike Andrews is dedicated to his track. All throughout the day, he would pick times when not many riders were out so he could water the track. The guy is just dedicated to what he does.

I was out on a 10 day vacation so I'm just now getting to this. I had all intentions of working on it a bit over the last several days but to put it simple... the internet connection where I was staying was a bit slow.

I really don't have much about this days event. I purchased a new camera and decided to head back out to Andrews and put it to the test. I mention in an earlier post that Andrews will keep you on your photo toes and I thought this would be perfect for getting a new camera broke in.

I started out with 1 good shot followed by 1 bad shot but by the end of the day, I think I had a good setting figured out... or at least my ratio of better shots vs bad shots started got a lot better.

I'm also tickled with the glass I was shooting with. With a 70-300mm lens, I was definitely able to get shots from the other side of the track with very little movement.

Anyways... here a few that turned out good.

Andrews 6.19.10

With Andrews Motorsports being close to home, it's easy to slip out that way when a plan hasn't been made to visit and shoot at any other tracks. Plus, there's a bonus when it comes to Andrews.

1. It's always the greatest feeling when you show up at the track and you see a dozen or more of your motocross buddies. This is almost always the case when I visit here.

2. The track is great for keeping you on your ( photo ) toes. Meaning there are places where sun is shining bright and there are places where the sun doesn't shine at all. The track is covered with trees and if you know anything about photography, you'll agree with me when I say... "you better keep your hand on that dial". If you're metered on that nice sunny spot, then good luck when they get to the heavy shaded spots. And then vice versa!

3. Bench racing! For those of you that don't know what that is, it's when we all sit around and talk about the old days of riding/racing. Whether it's you, your friends or someone else, there is always something to talk about. Believe it or not, we sometimes joke about our experiences with a bad crash. You'd be surprised of the healing powers that comes from bench racing. It's just what we do!

Moving on-

I got to the track around 11:30 am to help my friend Paul Ashmann get a few video shots with his new camera while no one was riding. But once 12 noon came around, one by one, riders began to make there way out on the track.

They say the early bird gets the worm! And with the track being so fresh with water, those greasy spots sure did make for some good "out of control" photos! Especially in the corners!

Some days are better than the others. This was the first lap of the day for #72. A few minutes later, she came up a little too short on a big double. Thus ending her day.

Spectating at Andrews is some of the best. You can pretty much go anywhere you want to watch the action.

The always fast Aaron Stancil ( #792 ) was out pounding some laps today in the heat. Aaron has also raced at the Atlanta Supercross and several AMA National tracks. In laymen terms, this guy is on the gas!

Other than crashing, a flat is the next to worst thing that can ruin your day. Especially in the heat!

Center Rd 6.13.10

We've been anxiously waiting for the chance to get back out to Center Rd MX for some photos. On Sunday June 13th, we got our chance, albeit with a slight twist.

First of all, I must say that Center Rd is at the top of my list of tracks that I love. It's a combination of several things that make Center Rd a delight. I've been going to this track for several years now and I've never seen a time when Sandy or whoever has the sign in sheet, isn't smiling. It's almost like she is more excited about you being there to ride, than you are, about riding!

In addition to their great personalities, a concession stand is available for your raging sweet tooth or if you just need more water. Most importantly, they've always, and I mean always... had flaggers out on the track to help out during practice days. Now tell me these guys aren't committed! Who else does this on practice days! I've spoken with Sandy several times and it's very evident that they are passionate about motocross.

Next is the track layout. If you like big jumps, they have em! If you like super fast sections, they have em! If you like technical sections, they have em! You get the idea right? It's just an all around, great place to ride. I always have a blast when I'm there.

There is one more thing I have to mention about Center Rd. It's the condition of the track. Out of all the years I've been going to this place, only once; the track wasn't watered. And that was due to a mechanical issue with their irrigation system. All other times, the track was just as good at 4 pm as it was when the gates open.

Just one more reason that lets you know. Center Rd is serious about motocross.

Remember that twist I mentioned earlier. Shortly after 3pm, a massive thunderstorm swept through and anyone who had a pop-up awning set up to shield off the sun were holding onto the rails so the wind wouldn't blow it away. Thank goodness I made it back to my truck before the bottom decided to fall out of the sky! This shot was taken after the rain slacked off. Any amount of time out in this storm with no cover meant you were soaked from head to toe!

When you have a passion for motocross, the heat has little affect on you... until you get dressed and start riding. You could tell the temperature was in the mid 90s as riders were only making a few laps before pulling off to rest and catch some fresh air.

Most people think that riding a dirt bike is nothing more than twisting the throttle. Ask any serious riders that same question and see what kind of response you get. Motocross is one of the most physically demanding sports out there. It takes a total commitment of your whole body to maneuver a bike around a motocross track. And when it's hot, well lets just say the heat will shine on the riders with good fitness.

Lots of water and good stretching habits are just a couple of things you should always have on hand.

Tyler is obviously in good shape. While other riders pulled off to rest, the # 717 rider kept putting in some blazing laps. I was completely shocked at how fast he was going in this heat.

oo-hoo... we finally made it. Things were starting to look like it was going to take a lot longer than expected but we've been putting in a lot of weekend hours just to get up and running. We are still making a few modifications here and there but for the most part.. the new factory 987 is alive and breathing.

Our next focus will be our videos. We took the videos that were on the old factory 987 and we're going to give them a new look. After those videos are complete, you'll be seeing even more video and photography work come to life. That is, of course, what the factory is most passionate about.

The whole theory of factory 987 is about reaching for your dreams, exploring your dreams and lastly, having an impact on the world because of your dreams.

And this is exactly what we intend to do!

Andrews 6.5.10

Other than it being Nascar week with traffic on all the roads in Concord like a hurricane evacuation, scattered thunderstorms came through and decided to shed heavy amounts of rain, causing Andrews to take a short breather. So after a few weeks of being closed, the track was watered, prepped and ready to go at 12 noon. Mike even decided to change up the layout of the track for a change and as always, great job to the guys that help Mike get everything ready. To my knowledge, there are only a couple of track owners that puts a ton of effort and hard work into prepping the track for riders, and one of them is Mike Andrews. I've actually helped prep the track on several occasions so I know exactly what kind of work is involved.

Even though it was hot and humid out today, there was still some left over thunderstorm areas on the track. Meaning... a few places were a bit muddy. With that being said, riders that came out today, were a little more reserved on twisting the throttle like usual. As the saying goes "you have to go slower in order to go faster". And on a day like today, you definitely needed to keep that in mind.

Even though the track had a few slick muddy spots, the track eventually formed into a gorgeous layout of ruts and moist dirt.

Blake Hovis ( #215 ) showed up and put in some blazing laps!

Windy Hill 5.30.10

When I think of motocross photography, Windy Hill Motorsports is one of the first places that comes to mind. Located out in the country land of Ellerbe NC, you are almost guaranteed plenty of crisp and clean motocross images. In addition to the location being superb, the staff at the track is about as friendly as one can be.

To start things off the track was a little muddy in some places but between all the riders, the sun and the humidity, those places were surely going to be drying up before long. Not to mention the soil at Windy Hill can take in a lot of water before things get out of hand.

Before the race action begins, riders are offered a short practice session to get a feel of the track or check out which line may be the best. After that, it's get your bike ready and head to the starting gate. The first motos of each class usually run until noon and then riders have a 45 minute break and then racing starts all over again.

Overall the day was a 10 out of 10. There were no accidents that required medical attention and all of the racing from each class seemed to be clean.

Or at least the parts I saw were clean!

Factory 987 is going through some really big changes. After talking with some people that are "in the business", I've found out that my work is there but the "magic touch" is missing. So we're working like a mad man on getting everything up and running.

Hopefully, sooner than later, we'll have everything ready to go.
